Our Story
Hello, we’re Kyle and Katie Winkelman, owners of Sling ‘N Scoops.
You probably already guessed this - but we LOVE ice cream. We even had our first date at a Cold Stone Creamery back in 2007.
From the moment we shared that first root beer float, ice cream has been a big part of our life together. We got married in 2013 and ice cream date nights have always been one of our favorite things to do.
In the fall of 2019, we decided to bring an ice cream shop to Red Bud, IL. We wanted others to have a place to meet old friends, make new friends and maybe have that first date!
In early spring of 2020, Sling 'N Scoops was ready to open its doors. Sadly, Covid put a damper on our plans. As we powered through 2020, we were looking for more opportunities to serve ice cream in the area. Thus, our first ice cream cart was built!
Fortunately, Sling 'N Scoops was warmly welcomed into the wedding industry. The industry was ready for a more entertaining dessert option. An experience that you won't get everyday. With the popularity we gained, we decided to build a second ice cream cart in late 2022.
In 2023, Sling 'N Scoops had the opportunity to purchase a used ice cream bike. Though the bike didn't fit our vibe, it had a lot of potential. After many months of redesign and rehab, the ice cream bike made its debut in the summer of 2023!
Customers stated that they would like to see more dye free and dairy free options. In late 2022 Fresh & Frosty Artisan Pops was born! Fast forward to spring of 2024, Fresh & Frosty production facility was approved to begin wholesale.

Our Historic Building
Sling N’ Scoops now occupies a self-contained back portion of the Carnahan’s historic Kaffenberger Building in downtown Red Bud. The building dates back to 1890 and has been home to many different businesses over the years, including a cigar factory, a bank, a bakery, a barber shop, newspaper offices, and clothing and grocery stores.
Market on Main remains in the front portion of the building. This is where Joyce teaches cooking and baking classes and offers her famous baked goods. Other pop up shops, such as Gram’s Apron, also occupy the space..
With help from our family and friends, we renovated and painted the shop. We worked hard to keep the building’s historic character, re-purposing and installing the original ceiling tiles from the third story of the building and adding them into the new space.
The countertops were repurposed from the wooden bowling lanes once owned by Katie’s family; Ferguson Bowling Lanes in Ferguson, Mo., which dates back to 1939.
Kyle built all of the cabinetry and tables. The front of the ice cream case and the barn doors were constructed from reclaimed materials obtained from Barry Moon of Old House Parts in Evansville, Ill.
