Our Story

Hello, we’re Kyle and Katie Winkelman, owners of Sling ‘N Scoops.

You probably already guessed this - but we LOVE ice cream. We even had our first date at a Cold Stone Creamery back in 2007.

From the moment we shared that first root beer float, ice cream has been a big part of our life together. We got married in 2013 and ice cream date nights have always been one of our favorite things to do.

In the summer of 2019, we discovered an ice cream shop in Kimberling City, Mo., that served Bliss Artisan Ice Cream. We had never tasted ice cream so creamy! The flavors were so intense and so different from the ordinary chocolate and vanilla we’d grown up with.

We knew right away that we wanted to bring this kind of ice cream back home to Red Bud, Illinois. For years, we had kicked around the idea of opening our own ice cream shop. Now, we had just the right product!

All we needed now was the right location!

A conversation with Kyle’s former high school home economics teacher, Joyce Carnahan and her husband, Bob, led to an agreement on the use of part of their gorgeous historic building at 204 South Main Street in Red Bud.

Our Historic Building

Sling N’ Scoops now occupies a self-contained back portion of the Carnahan’s historic Kaffenberger Building in downtown Red Bud. The building dates back to 1890 and has been home to many different businesses over the years, including a cigar factory, a bank, a bakery, a barber shop, newspaper offices, and clothing and grocery stores.

Market on Main remains in the front portion of the building. This is where Joyce teaches cooking and baking classes and offers her famous baked goods. Other pop up shops, such as Gram’s Apron, also occupy the space..

With help from our family and friends, we renovated and painted the shop. We worked hard to keep the building’s historic character, re-purposing and installing the original ceiling tiles from the third story of the building and adding them into the new space.

The countertops were repurposed from the wooden bowling lanes once owned by Katie’s family; Ferguson Bowling Lanes in Ferguson, Mo., which dates back to 1939.

Kyle built all of the cabinetry and tables. The front of the ice cream case and the barn doors were constructed from reclaimed materials obtained from Barry Moon of Old House Parts in Evansville, Ill.
